OO-gauge railway models have been the mainstay of the hobby for a long time, and were the first popularly affordable size for general home toys as well as collectors.
Like the wargaming 25mm scale and the scale modellers 1:72 size, it offers excellent detail and an easy to use model size.
OO-gauge railway models are actually 1:76 scale and as such have wide support from the mass-production plastic kit designers, but it is under-sized for the main 25mm wargames hobby. Despite this, a trend has emerged in recent years for urban skirmish wargaming to use a mix of plastic 1:72, 1:76, and OO-gauge models due to the massive choice that this provides.
Models are often labelled as HO-OO or HO/OO and the misnomer surrounding this is explained on our HO-gauge Rail Models page.
Modellers considering purchasing such kits should ask to inspect the contents and look, for example, at the size of doors and doorways. Compare the height of the door to the figure size (not scale) with which you intend to use the rail model or building. A standard door should be 10% to 20% taller than the model of a man.
