  • 19mm is 1:96 scale.
  • 20mm is 1:93 scale.
  • 21mm is 1:87 scale & Rail modelling HO-gauge.

These three mm scales can effectively be grouped as one for wargamers.  The difference between the 1:96 scale used by a relatively few plastic model manufacturers, and the 1:87 scale of railway modelling HO-gauge is very small on the wargames table.

The 20mm scale is really a derivative of the HO scale anyway, rather than a further size-creepage from the 1:100 / 18mm scale many manufacturers pass off as 15mm / 1:120 – wargamers seem to like nice round numbers in their scales (easier to remember?) and thus we have 20mm wargaming scale.

There’s not much I can say about this scale for wargamers as it’s not one I’ve ever bought figures or models for.  It also seems to have risen from niche-gaming to more popular support since I left the UK in 1999, and took up residence in Asia, therefore I’ve never seen it in action at clubs or conventions.

If any kind soul who is thoroughly familiar with 20mm gaming would like to send me a short summary of its place in wargaming and the names of a few manufacturers, I’ll add the infor they supply to this page.

Just about the only thing I do know about it, is that it seems to have gained some degree of support in the science-fiction genre, and if I recall correctly, it was also used heavily for early WW2 vehicles and figures when it first appeared at wargames conventions.  I seem to recall seeing some exquisite British LRDG jeeps and similar as very early offerings in this scale – if anyone knows more about this, please let me know.

LRL Generic 2-arch buttressed bridge with 18mm figure for sizing

LRL Generic 2-arch buttressed bridge
with 18mm figure for sizing,
At 10mm-15mm it’s a road bridge, at 20mm it’s a cattle crossing.

Long Range Logistics 20mm Ranges

Long Range Logistics currently has no models specifically designed for 20mm scale.  Several of our uniScale models do bridge this sizing, and generic pieces (such as our field walling system, 2-arch buttressed bridge, and 2-room ruined cottage) scale down to fit with 20mm.

We will be designing 20mm scale / 1:93 building ranges in the future but do not yet have a start date for this.  We’d like to hear from our customers about which styles, eras, genres, they would like us to look at producing in 20mm, so we can start compiling design lists.
